HISTORY OF THE INTERNATIONAL GOVERNORS
CUP TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP
The International Governor’s Cup Tournament in Cabo
San Lucas represents the highest level of interest in tournament
fishing in Los Cabos, Baja Sur. The tournament organizers
originally started the tournament series with a more informal,
no entry fee style of fishing tournament held throughout the
State of Baja Sur. A total of 22 tournaments took place in
2007. Some of the events where held in well-known fishing
areas of Baja Sur including Los Cabos, Mulege, Loreto and
La Paz. Many were held in areas that had never experienced
the excitement of tournament fishing. Small towns like; La
Ribera, Lopez Mateos, Todos Santos, Asuncion, Punta Abreojos,
La Bocana, Guerrero Negro, San Bruno, Santa Rosalia, Mulege
Viejo, Buena Vista, Los Barriles, San Carlos, El Cardonal,
and others. The response from both competing anglers and the
communities involved was incredible. Everyone involved –
anglers fishing from boats, anglers fishing from shore and
the sponsors who took part in the event – resolved to
continue to take part in future events.
The tournaments demonstrated that recreational sport fishing
can generate higher revenues than commercial fishing for local
municipalities and the State of Baja Sur and they wish to
preserve sport fishing in Baja for future generations. An
ambitious effort to further the growth of recreational sport
fishing throughout Baja Sur is the focus of the tournament
organizers. It was the success of these small, informal tournaments
that sparked interest in creating a “championship”
tournament.

The organizers
hope to continue to educate the communities involved, as well
as local and federal government officials, that sport fishing
is the highest and best use of the waters off Baja.
Through the efforts of Governor Narciso Agúndez Montaño,
tournament founder Oscar Armando Daccarett, tournament V.P.
Clicerio Mercado, and many, many others, the International Governors
Cup Tournament promises to be an event to remember with a promising
future of becoming one of the premier sport fishing competitions
in the world. A guaranteed minimum of 88% of all total entry fees will
be paid out to the winnng teams.
The organizers are also committed to making the event the best
organized, most angler and sponsor friendly tournament fishing
event there is today. Steps are being taken to streamline the
process of registration at the event, the distribution of team
gift bags, team shirts, fishing licenses and all other necessary
components needed for a successful tournament. The goal is to
make the experience one to remember and to encourage anglers
and sponsors to return to support the event for years to come.
We hope that you’ll mark you calendars and set aside the
dates to take part in this soon to be history-making sport fishing
tournament. |
